Cultural Etiquette

Essential Guide for Respectful Travel

Bali is deeply rooted in Balinese Hindu culture, traditions, and daily rituals. Understanding and respecting local customs not only enhances your travel experience but also helps you connect respectfully with the local community. This Bali cultural etiquette guide covers essential do’s and don’ts every visitor should know.

Respecting Balinese Culture & Local Traditions

  • Dress modestly when visiting temples and religious sites—cover shoulders and knees.
  • Always wear a sarong and sash when entering temples (often provided at entrances).
  • Avoid stepping on offerings (Canang Sari) placed on sidewalks, temples, and shops.
  • Use your right hand when giving or receiving items.
  • Do not touch people on the head, as it is considered sacred.
  • Public displays of affection should be minimal, especially near temples.
  • Avoid pointing your feet at people or religious objects while sitting.
  • Women should avoid entering temples during menstruation (local belief).
  • Respect ceremonies—do not interrupt rituals for photos.
  • Always ask permission before photographing locals or religious events.

Traveler Tip: Showing respect for Balinese customs is appreciated and often rewarded with warm hospitality.
